As I stood at my back door gazing upon the fresh fallen snow and longing for spring, I happen to look up into our big Cottonwood tree that stands in all its grandeur in our small courtyard. Close to the top of the tree a perfectly constructed nest swayed in the gentle wind. I was amazed that it had weathered the harsh winter winds, rain, and snow. The longer I stood there the more I thought about the momma bird and how she must have gone about building such a nest. She probably busied herself flying here and there finding the best of items. Maybe she used a strong twig, a piece of string, while knitting it all together to make a safe strong home for her little chicks.
My husband has long since referred to our home as “momma’s little nest”. In the same way the momma bird instinctively built her nest to weather any storm we too have to build a strong nest for our little ones. The word nest actually means a place of retreat, rest or lodging. I just love that! We should be busying ourselves with the task of building our nest as a place of refuge, strength, and love.
The things we build our nest with are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-25).
